In the midst of a terrible plague at the height of Japan’s Warring States period, Lord Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 12 demons in order to save his region, the Ishikawa province. 86 is as exciting as it is tragic, uncompromising in its themes while staging thrilling battles scenes. There’s palpable tragedy in how its wider cast of 86 are fully aware of their assigned fates, and all they can do is try and delay it as long as possible. But the insect-like machines charging into battle for the Republic are not autonomous they're piloted by an oppressed underclass of humans referred to only as "86s," a fact known by the military but hidden from civilians, who are stripped of all human rights and forced to fight and die to keep San Magnolia safe. Based on the light novel series, it begins in the wealthy republic of San Magnolia, showing its capital city from the perspective of Lena, a young major in the military responsible for commanding an army of machines against an opposing Legion of AI drones. Taking place more than 100 years in the future during wartime between two groups of supposedly autonomous machines, 86 is immediately striking in its disturbing engagement with fascism and the banality of evil.

The main culprits behind the always increasing popularity are shows many people have been hooked on at some point in their lives: the endless adventure series like One Piece iconic shows that continue to have that same impact over new generations, like Dragon Ball, Bleach, Sailor Moon, and Naruto (and Boruto) and, of course, some new titles joining the fray as well, like Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, and the blood-pumping My Hero Academia, which successfully mixes Western superhero elements in a traditional shonen manga mold. Action series have been a gateway into anime for the longest time, sparking the interest of new fans through thrilling confrontations and big, blow-out battles.
